Client Success Story – Nancy Richard-Lany

Hi, I’m Nancy and this is my story of how I can to hire Patty as my personal trainer.
My life before Fitness by Patty was rife with personal problems (aren’t all one’s problems personal?) and riddled with the various conflicts of modern life. Of course, I had joys, like a beautiful family and total immersion in a mid-life career change that required re-entry into academics.
My Old Routine
At least once a week, I would drag myself outside for a run. I tried to convince myself that if I kept my running ritual going, I would stay in some semblance of shape until graduation. I thought I ate healthy, but I often found myself grabbing the healthiest meals I could find on the go, which usually meant highly processed food masquerading as all-natural health food. Five months of a sedentary lifestyle, a lack of sleep, and low quality food produced a softer, more tired, significantly chubbier, and creakier version of myself. I felt miserable about my health. Not even my shinny 4.0 GPA could justify the damage I’d done in a few months.
Patty’s Hugs
The first time I met Patty she hugged me, I mean really hugged me with genuine feeling. I personally am not a big hugger, so I was slightly taken aback. Now, I am convinced in my sorry state I probably looked like I desperately needed a hug. I am not stupid; I took the hug. Today, I hug Patty every time I see her, and I still feel like she means it. However, my hug-affair with Patty isn’t exclusive. She hugs all her clients because she cares about each one, and that’s simply who she is. From Patty, I also get warm smiles, unlimited encouragement, true mentorship, inspirational text messages, and giggles aplenty – great for facial and abdominal muscles!
Education + Motivation + Inspiration = Success
For years, I have told people with a straight face, “I eat really healthy.” While I didn’t eat poorly enough to pack on excessive pounds, I ate a lot of processed foods labeled “low calorie,” “low fat,” “all-natural,” and “diet.” Patty taught me how to eat for nutrients and fuel and how to eat to feel good.
Patty assessed my three-day food diary in an early session, and we reviewed it together and discussed alternatives to some of the low quality foods I ate. Today, my diet consists of wholesome grains, plenty of lean protein, lots of fruits and veggies, and healthy fats. I drink between 2,500-3,000 mls of water per day. I’ve cut out all processed foods and diet sodas. I’ve learned that what we put into our body is crucial to what we get out of our bodies.
I love the way Patty taught me to eat because
- the food tastes amazing and is all real food
- I feel fantastic
- I no longer get crushing headaches nor suffer from allergies
- I am always hydrated
- I have dropped those extra unwanted pounds
- It is sustainable,
I Have A Strong, Lean Body with Actual Muscles
While Patty is free and loose with hugs and giggles, she is serious about getting the most out of each workout for every client. Once I enter the studio, I WORK OUT! Every workout is different, so I never get bored. I’ve done partner sessions, solo sessions, pool sessions, park sessions, beach sessions and stadium sessions, and ALL are challenging! I have never left a session with Patty thinking it was a waste of time, energy, or money.
Before Patty, I was a typical runner, happy in my delusion that if I could run a marathon, I must be in good shape. In the beginning, Patty and I had a discussion about my “goals” for training.
My primary goals were to:
1. not feel like crap
2. have more energy
3. maybe shed a few pounds
Like I said, I set my fitness bar too low. After years of running and 8 marathons under my belt, my body had not changed much… at all. I had always been thin but wiggly, and my motto was “I run so I don’t weigh 300 lbs.” Patty dismissed my meager goals: “Do you want to be stronger? Have muscle definition?” I actually laughed at her. “Yeah, sure.” I had zero confidence that my alleged muscles would leave their cozy home on Cellulite Bay and come out to play.
I am pleased to report Patty’s optimism was well placed. After 9+ months of consistently working out with Patty, I am now in the best shape of my adult life, physically, mentally, and emotionally! Today, I have visible biceps, triceps, shoulders, defined back and abdominal muscles, and I have shed the cellulite on my thighs enough that I can see good things happening after each session. There are times when I catch myself in a mirror (sometimes naked), and I am stunned. “Is this my body?!” Then I proudly acknowledge, “Why, YES, it is!!”
Training with Patty is Worth Every Penny
I got my mojo back 100 times over, and I no longer suffer from a lack of motivation. The results I live every day motivate me to continue the healthy lifestyle Patty champions. I eat well balanced, healthy and nutritious meals, I exercise 5-6 times per week (and not just cardio anymore), I have lost 12 pounds, and I am stronger than I ever thought possible. But I have realized now for me, it’s not about the weight on the scale. I feel truly confident in my own skin, and I have learned to love myself again.
This begs the question: why continue working out with a personal trainer if I got what I paid for? Done deal, right? What I have come to realize is Patty has a skill set I don’t have. She has the experience, the credentials, and the God-given spirit to move me to reach my potential. If I need a tooth pulled, I am not going to rip my own tooth with pliers. I am going to call a specialist—(you know, that professional you actually pay to pull your tooth out with pliers). Patty is truly a specialist. She is worth every penny I used to say I was never going to spend on a personal trainer. She is my personal cheerleader in the healthy lifestyle that alludes so many in our culture. I can’t think of a better person to walk next to on the road less traveled.
